The SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team opened its 2015 SUNYAC schedule with a 12-7 victory against Oswego today. Due to field conditions the game was moved to Fayetteville-Manlius High School, which didn't affect the Red Dragons one bit, as they registered a season high 12 goals in the win. Junior
Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields) led the attack this afternoon with three goals and two assists for a total of five points.
Â
Oswego (3-3, 0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first six minutes of the opening quarter on goals by Tyler Nason and Connor Khammer.
Â
Oneonta (4-4, 1-0) then ripped off three unanswered over a span of 3:07 to grab its first lead of the contest. Junior
Taylor Kalbacher (Syosset/Syosset) opened the scoring at the 7:29 mark off an assist from sophomore
Charles Montgomery (Pleasantville/Pleasantville). Montgomery was able to find Kalbacher on the crease before pushing it past the Oswego goalie.
Â
Coyle followed with his first of the game with an assist from classmate
Devon Casey (Garden City/Kellenberg). Junior
Daniel King (Hauppauge/Hauppauge) completed the trio of goals with an unassisted tally at 4:22.
Â
Matt Palmer knotted the score at three with 1:56 remaining in the quarter, which is how the two teams would enter the second quarter.
Â
Freshman
Alec Solomito (Holtsville/Sachem East) notched his third goal of the season less than five minutes into the second quarter to give the Red Dragons the lead for good. Sophomore
Austin McAskill (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) got the assist on the Solomito goal. King scored his second of the game and sixth of the season four minutes later to give Oneonta a two-goal lead that they would carry into halftime.
Â
Sophomore
Robert Neubert (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem East) took a feed from Coyle before depositing a shot to the back of the cage to give Oneonta a 6-3 lead five minutes into the third quarter. Oswego answered with a pair of its own goals to pull within 6-5 before freshman
John Shea (Huntington/Huntington) scored his first collegiate goal to put Oneonta back up by two goals at the 7:38 mark.
Â
The two teams then traded goals before a goal by Nason pulled the Lakers to one goal once again at 8-7 with 30 seconds to go in the third frame. Coyle then scored on transition with two ticks left on the clock to give the Red Dragons a 9-7 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.
Â
Oneonta played shutdown defense in the final quarter, holding the Lakers scoreless, while putting up three more goals for the final margin of victory.
Â
Sophomore
Ryan Adler (Smithtown/Smithtown West) made six saves today in goal for Oneonta, as he picked up his fourth victory of the season.
Â
The Red Dragons will not be in action again until next Saturday when they travel to Brockport for a SUNYAC contest beginning at 1pm.
