Trailing 7-2 in a driving rain storm at halftime, a valiant second half comeback effort tonight by the SUNY Oneonta men's lacrosse team came up one goal short at Clark University 8-7. The Red Dragons had the ball with just over one minute remaining in the game and worked for a shot by sophomore
Nathan Doody (Tully/Tully), but Clark goalie Drew Riopelle Tyrell made the save. The Cougars were able to clear the ball and ran out the final 42 seconds to secure the win.
Â
After Clark (5-2) scored the opening goal of the second half, Oneonta (3-4) put the clamps on the Cougar attack and began its comeback. The Red Dragons would register four goals in the third quarter to pull within 8-6 entering the fourth.
Â
Junior
Connor Coyle (Centerport/Harborfields) got things going for Oneonta off an assist from sophomore
Charles Montgomery (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) at the 9:11 mark. Exactly one minute later, junior
Taylor Kalbacher (Syosset/Syosset) took a pass from sophomore
Austin McAskill (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) before burying a shot in the goal to make the score 8-4.
Â
Doody then ripped off a pair of unassisted goals less than one minute apart late in the quarter to pull the Red Dragons to within a pair of goals.
Â
Coyle tallied an unassisted goal with 2:11 remaining in the contest to make the score 8-7.
Â
Doody and Coyle led the attack tonight with two goals each.
Â
Sophomore goalie
Ryan Adler (Smithtown/Smithtown West) made 12 saves tonight in goal for Oneonta.
Â
The Red Dragons will next play this Saturday versus Oswego, as they open the SUNYAC portion of its schedule. The game has been moved to Fayetteville-Manlius High School beginning at 3pm.
