Baseball splits with Curry College

Matt Mastroianni hits walk off home run in game 1

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team was in action yesterday in Auburndale, Fla., as they took on Curry College in a twin bill.  The Red Dragons earned a split with the Colonels as they remained at the .500 mark through the first six games off its southern trip.

In game 1, senior Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) played the hero with a walk-off home run that gave Oneonta a 4-3 win.  Mastroianni came to bat with two outs before parking one over the fence for the game-winning hit.  Mastroianni collected a pair of hits in the game for Oneonta.

Oneonta scored first in the second inning when junior LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) drove in a pair with a sharp single to left field.  Senior Jon Halligan (Cornwallville/Cairo Durham) and junior Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)) came around to score for the Red Dragons.  Stamile had singled to lead off the inning and he was followed by a walk to Halligan.  They were moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt by junior Joe Franke (Livingston Manor/Liberty Central).

Curry (5-4) got one back in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out, RBI double by Evan Morris.  He drove in John Arens from second base after he had singled to lead off the inning and advancing to second on a wild pitch.

Gizzarelli drove in his third run of the game in the bottom of the inning when he hit a sacrifice fly to center field that drove in Halligan from third base.  Halligan led off the inning with a single and went to second on a ground out to second base before moving to third on a single by sophomore Sean Mullins (Vestal/Vestal).

After the first two hitters struck out to start the fifth inning for Curry, leadoff batter Kyle Connors doubled.  Arens was the next batter and he single Connors home to make the score 3-2.

For the third time in the game, Curry was able to push across a run with two outs, this time in the top of the sixth inning.  Nick Crivello hit a one-out single and went to second on another single by Derek Pizarro with two outs.  Crivello scored on the third single of the inning, this one off the bat of Anthony Sciaudone, which knotted the game at 3-3.

Freshman Nicholas Ponesse (Newburgh/Valley Central) picked up his first collegiate win in relief for Oneonta.  Ponesse entered the game in the top of the sixth with two outs.  Ponesse didn't surrender a hit in his 1 1/3 innings.

Freshman Christopher Didomizio (Cortlandt Manor/Lakeland ) threw five solid innings in his collegiate debut for the Red Dragons surrendering only five hits and giving up two earned runs while striking out four batters.

In game 2, a four-run second inning for the Colonel's erased a 2-0 deficit, which put them ahead to stay.  Sophomore Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning for Oneonta to get them to within one run at 4-3, but Curry scored its insurance run in the bottom of the inning, as they secured the win.

Sophomore Robert Marks (Brooklyn/Brooklyn Technical) went the distance for Oneonta recording seven strikeouts in his initial outing of the season.  He allowed six hits and only two earned runs in his six innings of work.

Junior Casey Kerdesky (Cornwall/Cornwall) and Halligan each had a pair of hits for the Red Dragons.

Oneonta will have Thursday off before heading to Mulberry, Fla. to facing Clarkson University on Friday for a doubleheader at Kathleen High School.  First pitch is scheduled for 10:30am.
