Men's basketball bows out of SUNYAC Tournament

Red Dragons fall to Oswego 68-59

The 2014-15 season for the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team came to an end tonight with a 68-59 loss to Oswego in the first round of the SUNYAC tournament.  The loss for the Red Dragons ends its season with an overall record of 13-13.  The win for the Lakers moves them into the semifinals this Friday night at Plattsburgh where they will play second-seeded SUNY Geneseo.

Junior Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) led three Red Dragons in double figures with 17 points.  Senior Kareem Williams (Bronx/IN-Tech Academy) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.  Sophomore Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) added 11 points for Oneonta.

Oneonta led early by as many as six points before the lead changed hands at 13-12 Oswego.  The Lakers then held the lead for a bit before the Red Dragons came back to regain the lead at 18-17 on a bucket by Coleman at the 9:37 mark.  Oneonta held onto the lead for the rest of the half, leading 32-26 at halftime.

A pair of free throws by McElroy at the 17:47 mark of the second half gave Oneonta its largest lead at 38-28.

Oswego began its comeback with a 17-6 run over the next seven minutes to take the lead back at 45-44.  Alex Rawa scored seven points for the Lakers during the run.

Oneonta would gain its last lead of the contest at 49-48 on a three-pointer by McElroy at the 8:43 mark.  A three by Brian Sortino on Oswego's next possession gave them the lead back at 51-48.  The score would be tied twice more before a Sortino trey gave Oswego the lead for good.

A Layup by senior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) with 3:01 remaining brought Oneonta to within one point, but that would be as close as they would be for the rest of the game.  Oswego would score the final eight points of the game including 6-of-6 from the line.

Oswego had four players in double figures tonight led by Sortino's 16 points.
