Men's basketball outduels St. John Fisher 77-73

McElroy scores 25 points to lead Red Dragons

The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team outlasted the visiting St. John Fisher Cardinals today at home in non-league action 77-73.  St. John Fisher (4-3) erased a 15-point halftime deficit and had a lead late in the game before Oneonta (5-2) put together a closing 12-5 run to secure the win.
 
With the scored knotted at 65 apiece with 5:06 remaining, sophomore Alex Sausville gave St. John Fisher its last lead in the game as the Red Dragons stormed past them with nine unanswered points.  Senior Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) led the charge with four points.  McElroy finished the game with a team high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting.
 
The Cardinals first lead of the game came at the 10:52 mark of the second half on a layup by junior Keegan Ryan.  Ryan, who came off the bench today, scored 22 points and grabbed a game high 11 rebounds.  St. John Fisher had three runs during the second half of 7-0, 8-0 and 7-0 to get themselves the lead.
 
Senior Chaz Lott led all players today with 26 points including 18 in the second half.  The Cardinals shot 56 percent in the second half after hitting 43 percent in the first half.
 
Oneonta raced out to a 12-2 lead in the opening four minutes of the game.  McElroy and junior Lawrence Coleman (Croton on the Hudson/Hendrick Hudson) combined for nine of the points.  McElroy scored 15 of his 25 points in the opening twenty minutes, as the Red Dragons shot 49 percent from the floor.
 
Coleman finished the game with 15 points, seven rebounds and three steals.  Sophomore Ian Schupp (New Hampton/Goshen) came off the bench to add 13 points to round out Oneonta's double-digit scorers.
 
The Red Dragons held a 37-31 advantage on the glass including 12 offensive rebounds.  They connected on seven from behind the arc led by Schupp's three from long range.
