Women's tennis rolls into SUNYAC semifinals

Red Dragons shutout Oswego Lakers 5-0

Binghamton, NY – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team rolled into the semifinals of the 2015 SUNYAC tournament today with an easy 5-0 victory against Oswego.  Oneonta, who earned the No. 2 seed from the East Division, will now face defending SUNYAC champion SUNY Geneseo tomorrow at noon at the Binghamton Tennis Center, site of theis year's championships.

The victory for the Red Dragons was its fourth in the last five matches and brought them to the .500 mark at 6-6 overall.  The triumph was significant in that the Red Dragon women opened up its season with three freshman in the lineup and were 2-5 just a couple of weeks ago.

Doubles play in today's quarterfinal saw the number one team of senior Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer) and sophomore Alana Green (Pittsford/Pittsford) play a flawless match.  After falling behind, 2-1, they then rattled off the next seven games to take the encounter 8-2.  Senior Samantha Butcher (Sidney/Sidney Central) and junior Christine Santarsiero (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) battled at the number two flight.  Ahead 7-4, their opponents made it 7-6, but they could get no closer and the Oneonta duo closed out the match winning by a score of 8-6.  The freshman doubles team of Aubrey Hodnett and Faith Haedrich (Islip/Islip) are now 5-0 since being united as a doubles duo two weeks ago.  Today they were dominant with another resounding victory, taking down the Lakers tandem in lopsided fashion 8-1.

With only having to win two singles matches to clinch a final four berth in championship weekend, the Red Dragon women did not let the Lakers off the hook.  Green quickly dismantled her opponent at number one singles with a score of 6-0, 6-0.  Santarsiero at number five singles win today proved to be the clincher when she won 6-0, 6-2 with the final point being a backhand passing shot that sealed her win and the team's triumph.

Other notables were Spencer at number two singles put a strangle hold on her opponent and was ahead 6-2, 4-1 when Red Dragon victory was clinched.  Butcher was ahead in her number four singles match as she was in front 6-4, 2-2 when play was suspended.  Hodnett was leading her match in the sixth position as she was comfortably in the drivers seat 6-1, 3-0 when play was halted.  Freshman Michelle Halpern (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) dropped the first set 1-6 but was on serve in the second trailing 3-4 when play was discontinued.
