Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer dominates Fredonia in shutout victory

Senior Jessica Lyden scores pair of goals

The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team completely dominated visiting Fredonia this afternoon en route to a season high seven goals in a 7-0 shutout of the Blue Devils.  The victory for Oneonta (11-2-2/7-0-1 SUNYAC) sets up a showdown with Buffalo State at home tomorrow for the regular season title and the top seed for the conference tournament.  The game at Red Dragon Field is scheduled for a 1pm kickoff.

The Red Dragons got on the scoreboard in the 11th minute of the match on a goal by senior Avery Serfis (West Hurley/Onteora).  Serfis volleyed a bouncing ball in front of the goal that came off a cross into the box by senior Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley).  Senior Caitlyn LaPier (Chazy/Chazy) also assisted on the goal, as she out jumped a Fredonia (4-11-1/2-5-1 SUNYAC) defender to keep the ball alive in front.

Senior Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) scored in the 32nd minute to give Oneonta a 2-0 lead.  Her goal came on a rebound after classmate Erica Berry (Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial) took a shot from the top of the box that was saved, but got away from the Fredonia keeper.

Lyden added a second goal in the 51st minute when she headed a crossing pass by Distin from the left flank past the keeper.

Distin scored a goal of her own just two minutes later to give her four points for the match.  Distin capitalized on a turnover by the defense inside the box.  Distin collected the loose ball and dribbled by the defense before getting off a shot with her left foot that went by the keeper to the right corner.

The final three goals for Oneonta came from sophomore Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) and freshmen Kayla Jones-Lockridge (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) and Kelsie Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa).  For Jones-Lockridge and Moinzadeh it was their first collegiate goals while Rolston's was her first of the season.

Rolston's goal came off a restart with the assist going to sophomore Paige McDermott (Floral Park/Kellenberg Memorial), who crossed the ball from the right flank.  Moinzadeh finished her goal with a header off a corner kick sent in by freshman Nicole Donadio ( Port Jefferson Station /Comsewogue), who also had an assist on the goal by Jones-Lockridge.

Oneonta outshot the Blue Devils 27-5 and earned 12 corners to Fredonia's one.

Seniors Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central) and Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster) and freshman Emilie Mull (Marcy/Whitesboro) combined for the shutout.

Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's contest with Buffalo State, Oneonta has earned a first round bye for the SUNYAC tournament, which begins on Saturday, Oct. 31.  The Red Dragons will host a semifinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 4.
