Women's basketball rallies late but comes up short at home

Red Dragons fall to SUNY Geneseo 51-47

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team staged a late rally but came up short at home tonight against SUNY Geneseo 51-47.  The Red Dragons trailed by 10 points with less than eight minutes to go but couldn't complete the comeback.

A jumper by sophomore Katie Durand gave Geneseo (6-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) a 38-28 lead with 7:52 mark of the second half.

A layup by Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) and a three-pointer by Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) quickly cut the lead to five points with 6:50 remaining.  Cohen finished the game with a team high 13 points before fouling out with 17 seconds left.

Oneonta (7-4, 2-2 SUNYAC) continued to chip away at the lead and closed it to a bucket when Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) made a jumper to make the score 43-41 with 3:14 to go in the contest.

Geneseo made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch including 4-of-4 from junior Dana Cohan.  Junior Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) and Cohen both scored in the final minute to keep it at a two-point game, but the clock would run out on the Red Dragons' final possession.

Price opened the game by draining a three-pointer for the hosts, but the Knights ran off 11 unanswered points to grab an 11-3 lead with just over 12 minutes to go in the opening half.

Trailing 20-10 at the 7:30 mark, Oneonta began to make its move.  Cohen made a layup and then a jumper on both ends of a 12-0 run for the Red Dragons that gave them a 22-20 lead with 1:26 to go in the half.  A free throw by Lea Sobieraski closed the half for the Knights, as Oneonta took a 22-21 lead into halftime.

Sobieraski would finish the game with 15 rebounds, as the Knights had a huge advantage on the glass, 51-28, including 21 on the offensive end.  Senior Shannon McGuiness recorded a double double with 14 points and 11 boards.  Cohan finished the game with 13 points.

In addition to Cohen, Price reached double figures with 10 points.

Oneonta will host Brockport tomorrow afternoon in another SUNYAC contest beginning at 4pm.
