The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team staged a late rally but came up short at home tonight against SUNY Geneseo 51-47. The Red Dragons trailed by 10 points with less than eight minutes to go but couldn't complete the comeback.
Â
A jumper by sophomore Katie Durand gave Geneseo (6-3, 2-0 SUNYAC) a 38-28 lead with 7:52 mark of the second half.
Â
A layup by
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) and a three-pointer by
Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) quickly cut the lead to five points with 6:50 remaining. Cohen finished the game with a team high 13 points before fouling out with 17 seconds left.
Â
Oneonta (7-4, 2-2 SUNYAC) continued to chip away at the lead and closed it to a bucket when
Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) made a jumper to make the score 43-41 with 3:14 to go in the contest.
Â
Geneseo made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch including 4-of-4 from junior Dana Cohan. Junior
Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) and Cohen both scored in the final minute to keep it at a two-point game, but the clock would run out on the Red Dragons' final possession.
Â
Price opened the game by draining a three-pointer for the hosts, but the Knights ran off 11 unanswered points to grab an 11-3 lead with just over 12 minutes to go in the opening half.
Â
Trailing 20-10 at the 7:30 mark, Oneonta began to make its move.  Cohen made a layup and then a jumper on both ends of a 12-0 run for the Red Dragons that gave them a 22-20 lead with 1:26 to go in the half. A free throw by Lea Sobieraski closed the half for the Knights, as Oneonta took a 22-21 lead into halftime.
Â
Sobieraski would finish the game with 15 rebounds, as the Knights had a huge advantage on the glass, 51-28, including 21 on the offensive end. Senior Shannon McGuiness recorded a double double with 14 points and 11 boards. Cohan finished the game with 13 points.
Â
In addition to Cohen, Price reached double figures with 10 points.
