Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball battles past Oswego

Caysea Cohen leads Red Dragons with 20 points

Junior Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led all scorers in the game today, as the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team battled past the visiting Oswego Lakers 71-64.  The win for Oneonta raised its overall record to 11-6 and 6-4 in the SUNYAC while the loss drops the Lakers to 5-12 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

Oneonta opened the second half with a 9-2 run to increase its halftime lead to double digits in the opening five minutes. Cohen scored five points in the spurt.

Oneonta continued to lead by double digits until six unanswered by Oswego closed the gap to 57-52 with 7:25 remaining.  Junior Tayler Sorell drilled a three-pointer to cap the run.

After Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) made a jumper, the Lakers put together another 6-0 spurt to close to within two points at 62-60.  That would be as close as Oswego would get, as Oneonta closed the Lakers out with a game-closing 9-4 run.

The Lakers had a pair reach double figures today with junior Heather Hebert leading the way with 18 points, which included a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.  Freshman Alisha Jacobs added 13 points.

Oneonta outrebounded Oswego 46-33 including 19 offensive rebounds.  The Red Dragons made eight from behind the arc and collected seven blocks.  Freshman Jillian Davis (Queensbury/Queensbury) came off the bench to score eight points, grab eight boards and block three shots.

Oneonta fell behind early and trailed for most of the opening nine minutes.  Two separate runs - one that was 9-0 and a second that was 10-0 – gave the Red Dragons its first lead of the game at 18-17 at the 10:45 mark.  Sophomore Brianna Spector (Philadelphia, PA/Upper Dublin) sparked the comeback with seven points off the bench.

Another 9-0 run by Oneonta, fueled by five points from freshman Jillian Davis (Queensbury/Queensbury), gave the Red Dragons a 27-20 lead with just over eight minutes remaining in the opening half.  The Lakers pushed back, but Oneonta was able to carry a 38-34 lead into halftime.

Oneonta will travel on Tuesday to play New Paltz.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.
