Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball tripped up in overtime by SUNY Cortland

In a game that had its share of ebbs and flows, it was the visiting Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland that stole a win in overtime tonight against the host SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons 59-57.  The visitors, who trailed at one point in the first half by a score of 24-6, managed to come all the way back where they took the lead late in the second half.

Oneonta (10-6/5-4 SUNYAC), led for most of the contest, but had to make a ferocious comeback in the final 4:08 to tie the score and force the extra period.

Trailing 47-40, junior Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) buried a pair of threes to cut the lead to one point with 26 seconds remaining.

Sophomore Danielle Levine than made 1-of-2 free throws to give Cortland (13-3/7-2 SUNYAC) a 48-46 lead with nine seconds to go.

On the ensuing possession for Oneonta, junior Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) grabbed an offensive rebound off a three-point miss by classmate Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) and put it back to tie the score at 48 apiece.  Loomis was also fouled on the play and went to the line with 1.5 tics left on the clock.  Loomis was not able to convert and Cortland controlled the rebound, as the two teams headed to overtime.

Senior Lindsey Minor started the extra session with a pair of free throws for Cortland before Price drilled a three on the next trip down the floor for Oneonta.  Levine came right back with a three of her own to give Cortland the lead back at 53-51 with four minutes still remaining in overtime.

Junior Caitlin Cariseo (Syracuse/Jamesville Dewitt) capped four unanswered by Oneonta, as they moved ahead 55-53 with 2:08 left to go.

After a made jumper by Brittney Dumas tied the game, Cohen and Price each made 1-of-2 free throws to put Oneonta back in front with under one minute to go.

Sophomore Cassidy Chapko made a pair of free throws to knot the game again with 19 seconds left.  Chapko ended up making the game-winner on a driving layup with one second left on the clock.  Cortland gained the final opportunity of the game after a traveling violation against Oneonta turned the ball over to Cortland with nine seconds left.

Dumas led Cortland with 18 points and 12 boards while Chapko added 10 points.

Cohen led all scorers in the game with 18 points including five baskets from long range.  Price added 12 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) added 10 points off the bench.

Oneonta will host Oswego tomorrow for another SUNYAC contest beginning at 4pm.
