Senior
Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) scored 13 points including a pair of free throws in the waning seconds, as SUNY Oneonta held off Fredonia today 66-63. The win for the Red Dragons salvaged a weekend split, as last night they fell to Buffalo State 71-59.
Â
A three-pointer by junior
Jack Dignan (Brewster/Brewster) with 4:53 remaining gave Oneonta (7-8, 4-4 SUNYAC) a 60-50 lead over Fredonia (1-13, 0-10 SUNYAC).
Â
After a pair of free throws by senior
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) at the 2:48 mark made it 64-55, the Blue Devils began to make its final run at the Red Dragons.
Â
Eight unanswered points by the host, which ended with a dunk by Ian Helps, Fredonia closed the deficit to 64-63 with 22 seconds left on the clock.
Â
With 16.1 seconds left to play, Fredonia fouled Mager and sent him to the line for a one and one where he sank both.
Â
The Red Dragons tied up the ball for a jump ball and Fredonia retained possession for one last shot. Robert Lyles had a good look but his three-point attempt went off the rim.
Â
Fredonia led for much of the first half. The Devils were up 24-21 following a Luke Hennesey three pointer, but the Red dragons ran off eight straight to close out the half to head to the locker room up 29-21.
Â
Oneonta opened the second half with a 15-7 run capped by a
Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) jumper at the 13:40 mark. Following a Kyree Hull layup, the Red Dragons ran off eight straight points to take what would prove to be the biggest lead of the game for either squad, 40-26.
Â
Midway through the second half, Fredonia would battle back to within five points on a three pointer by Hull at the 9:41 mark, making it 55-50.
Â
Hull led the Devils with 16 points. Lyles and Helps each added 12 points.
Â
Senior
Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic) added 11 points and five rebounds for Oneonta.
Â
Last night versus Buffalo State, Mager, Kelly and junior
Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) scored in double figures, but Oneonta shot only 28 percent from the floor in its 12 points loss to the Bengals.
Â
With the score tied at 43 apiece with 10:31 remaining in the game, the Bengals put together a 14-4 run over the next five minutes to pull away from Oneonta. The Red Dragons were able to cut the lead back to five points on two occasions, but Buffalo pushed it back to 10 points late.
Â
Oneonta's next contest is this coming Friday night when they face its rival from SUNY Cortland for the "Battle of the Red Dragons". The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30pm and fans of Oneonta are asked to wear white to support "Whiteout Night" in the Dewar Arena.
