Women's basketball sinks Buffalo State 68-63

Three players in double figures

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team went 6-for-6 from the free throw line over the final 42 seconds to hold off the host Buffalo State Bengals, 68-63, in SUNYAC action tonight.  Junior Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) led three Red Dragons in double figures with 18 points including 13 in the second half.

Sophomore Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) came off the bench to score 13 points, six in the second half, as she hit 3-of-3 from long range.  Senior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) contributed 13 points, six boards and four blocks.

Oneonta (9-5, 4-3 SUNYAC) led by as many as 11 points in the second half before Buffalo State (8-8, 5-3 SUNYAC) made its final push.

A layup by Longto gave the Red Dragons an 8-7 lead.  Her basket was part of a 12-0 run that gave Oneonta 14-7 lead at the 14:46 mark.  The Bengals battled all the way back to tie the score at 24 apiece on a three-pointer by Hillary Kollar.  A three-pointer by freshman Samantha Lisakatos and Cohen gave Oneonta a 30-24 advantage heading into halftime.

Oneonta came out of the break and built its lead to 11 points in the first four minutes.  The Red Dragons' lead exchanged between single and double digits over the next 14 minutes when Buffalo State began its final run.

Trailing 62-51 with 2:56 remaining, the Bengals scored nine unanswered to cut its deficit to 62-60 with 51 seconds to go in the contest.  Junior Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) made a pair of free throws and Cohen made four down the stretch to secure the five-point victory for the Red Dragons.

Oneonta will play at Fredonia tomorrow afternoon.  The game is scheduled to tip-off at 4pm.
