Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Messina’s Late Tally Lifts Women’s Soccer to First Win

Drop UMass-Dartmouth 2-1

Sept. 7, 2014

The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team finished off their 2014 Mayor's Cup action in a Sunday matinee against the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth. Junior Taylor Messina provided the game winner in the 83rd minute to give the Red and White their first win of the season.

The Red and White came out aggressive. It took less than four minutes for the Red Dragons to get their first chance as Jessica Lyden was able to throw a shot on cage threw a scramble just feet from the goal mouth but was unable to meet twine. Less than two minutes, the senior connection of captains Krystal Scott and Sarah Glowa put Oneonta on the board for the first time this season. Glowa broke through the Corsair defense taking Scott's feed on a break away scoring to the lower left portion of the goal

The Oneonta defense stood strong the entire half, not allowing the Corsairs a shot through the first 45 minutes, while the midfielders and forwards won the possession game to carry a 1-0 lead to the half.

The second half would prove more of a test to the Red and White as the Corsairs came out hungry to score. Neither squad could take control through the first 20 minutes of the second frame until an Oneonta foul led to Dartmouth's Maura Gonsalves game tying goal in the 68th minute.

Oneonta had a chance to answer in the 78th and 79th minutes when Caitlyn LaPier barely missed on headers on back-to-back corner kicks. With a clean momentum advantage, the Red Dragons answered the call in the 83rd minute when Glowa fed Messina who put the ball away short side.

The Corsairs made a run late to send the contest to overtime when Gonsalves looked to score her second goal of the game, however Red Dragon keeper Rory Stark had the answer to seal the victory.

Oneonta outshot the Corsairs 15-3 in the contest, while taking 10 corner kicks to the visitor's zero.

The Red Dragons return to action on Saturday, when they play host to Skidmore in a 2 p.m. contest.
