The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer squad looked to continue its winning way Saturday afternoon when the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore came to Red Dragon Soccer Field.
Â
The Red and White's bid at the second win of the season looked good through 45 minutes on a cold, rainy fall Saturday but Skidmore proved too much to handle in the second half.
Â
Oneonta controlled the majority of first half action with domination in shots (five to one) and corners (seven to none) forcing starting Skidmore keeper Madison Plummer to be aggressive and come out of the cage to challenge the ball. The pressure paid off in the 32
nd minute when Plummer was called for a foul in the box after she took down senior
Sarah Glowa (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), who was breaking away from the defense, forcing a penalty kick. Last week's hero,
Taylor Messina (Smithtown/Smithtown East), stepped to the dot for the free shot meeting twine on the lower right side of the cage. The Red and White held the 1-0 advantage through halftime.
Â
Early second half action brought a continuation of the possession battle; the two teams swapped fouls for the first third of the stanza before the Thoroughbreds knotted the game at one in the 72
nd minute. From there, the Red Dragons were not able to recover as Skidmore tacked on the game-winner in the 83
rd minute.
Â
Oneonta falls to 1-4 on the season, looking to bounce back on Wednesday when it travels to Troy, N.Y. to take on RPI in a 7 p.m. contest.
