Oneonta Splits Day 1 of Bomber Invite

Move to 4-1 on the year

Sept. 5, 2014
ITHACA, NY – The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons traveled to Ithaca to take part in the two-day Bomber Invitational. In the first match of the day, the Dragons faced off against Baptist Bible and Union College.

The Red and White moved to 5-0 on the young campaign with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-17) win over Baptist Bible. With the score tied a 2-2 early in the first set, Allyson Coniglione recorded a kill to spark a 7-0 run to give the Red and White a 9-2 lead which they would not relinquish. Junior Kristen Polan's killed a feed from Coniglione to out the Dragons up 20-13, before moving to the service line to finish of the final five points.

The second set would not come so easy the teams were neck and neck in the early going. Oneonta used a handful of quick spurts, finished off with three straight aces from Polan to power the win.

The third set was a back and forth affair early. The Red and White got off to a quick 3-0 before seeing the game get tied and untied through a 9-9 score. Sophomore Hayley Dower set off the final push dishing an assist to senior Natalia Poljak, before service three straight rallies which ended in Red Dragon points. Whitney Blair gave Oneonta distance scoring a pair of service aces in a five play span to pull the score to 22-11.

Oneonta suffered its first loss of the season by 0-3 (18-25, 24-26, 21-25) mark in the second match of the night against Union.  The back and forth contest saw the Red and White lead by as many as five at 14-10 following a five point spurt lead by the serve of Polan. Union, however, put together a 10-3 run to take the lead and eventually the first set.
Neither squad could get an advantage in the second set, as the game was tied 15 times, including every point after a 17-17 deadlock. Union ultimate came out on top by a 24-26 margin.

The start of the third set mirrored the first pair, until Union was able to put together an 11-2 stretch the Dragons were not able to overcome.

Oneonta looks to rebound tomorrow afternoon when it challenge Cazenovia at 1:15.
