Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer draws with SUNY Cortland 2-2

The No. 3 SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team battled its rival Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland for 110 minutes today and came away with a 2-2 draw.  Oneonta remained unbeaten at 7-0-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the SUNYAC while Cortland left town 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.

Oneonta didn't waste any time in going up 1-0, as freshman Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) pushed a ball past the keeper in the second minute of the game.  He took a pass from senior Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) and was able to squeeze a shot between the outstretched keeper and the crossbar.

Less than 10 minutes later, Cortland tied the game on an unassisted goal by Sean Streb.  Streb was able to beat Oneonta starter, Brian Wagstaff (Apalachin/Chenango Valley), with a shot from just outside the box.

In the 27th minute, Santangelo struck again with his fifth goal of the season.  This time he collected a crossing pass from junior Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee) and one-timed a shot to the back of the goal.

Oneonta held its 2-1 lead at halftime while also holding a slight edge in shots, 4-2, and corner kicks, 4-0.

The tying goal for Cortland came in the 60th minute unassisted by Robby Reiser.  Reiser broke in on Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/C-NS), who entered the game at the start the second half, and dribbled around him and tapped a shot into the goal.

The teams combined for two shots each during the two overtime periods, which forced penalty kicks for seeding purposes in the SUNYAC tournament.

In the shootout, the first two shooters for each team scored.  Chris McBride was the third kicker for Cortland and he sailed a shot high over the goal.  The next kicker for Oneonta was senior Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) and Tim Beauvais stopped his shot.

The next kickers for each squad buried their shots to set up the final kicks to decide the shootout.  Wagstaff saved Robby Reiser's shot before DeBottis stepped up and drilled his kick for the final of 5-4 for Oneonta.

DeBottis earned the tie today for Oneonta, as he played the final 65 minutes, recording three saves.  Beauvais made four saves in goal for Cortland.

Oneonta will be on the road at Brockport and SUNY Geneseo next weekend for back-to-back SUNYAC matches.
