The SUNY Oneonta volleyball team kicked of SUNYAC Pool Play as host Friday evening in Dewar Arena. The Red and White fell to New Paltz 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-23).
Oneonta came out fired up, bringing excitement with every point. A
Paige Carpluk (Yaphank/Bellport) ace gave the Red and White an early 3-1 advantage that began to get the crowd involved. The Hawks took over from there, but not without fight from the Red Dragons. After New Paltz took a 4-3 lead, Oneonta tied the game over the next couple points. The excitement came back following a powerful block by the combination of
Kristen Polan (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) and
Erika Corbin (Kirkwood/Windsor) to knot the first set at six. New Paltz controlled the rest of the set for the 25-14 win.
Oneonta got down early in the second set and was never able to bounce back; until the third set that is. The Red and White controlled the early portion of the deciding set highlighted by the service of
Erin Avery (Harpursville/Harpursville), Carpluk, and
Whitney Blair (Binghamton/Windsor). A
Hannah O'Neil (Brookhaven/Bellport) kill provided a match-high for Oneonta with a three point advantage. The pesky Hawks wouldn't go away ultimately coming away with the 25-23 set win.
The Red Dragons continue pool play at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning when they face the other Red Dragons, Cortland and Potsdam at 12:30.
