Oswego, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team opened SUNYAC play Friday evening against the Lakers of Oswego. The squads battled to a 0-0 draw through two overtime periods, however the Red and White took the penalty kick tiebreaker 5-4.
Kelly Murphy got the start between the pipes for Oneonta recording a trio of saves in 45 minutes of action. The Red and White offense put the pressure on early firing a pair of shots in the first three minutes, though neither was on target. Murphy closed the quiet first half with back-to-back saves seconds before the buzzer.
Rory Stark manned the net from the second half on to finish the clean sheet for Oneonta. Just like the opening stanza, the Red and White applied pressure early.
Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) put a ball on target in the 54
th minute, followed by a pair of
Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) shots over the next few minutes, though none could break the goal line.
After a quiet first overtime session, Oneonta had chances to bring home the win in the second extra period. The Red Dragons' biggest push came when freshman
Paige McDermott (Floral Park/Kellenberg Memorial) hit the crossbar in the 108
th minute, and was followed by an
Erica Berry (Bellmore/Kellenberg Memorial) shot that was denied.
Though the game officially ended as a draw, SUNYAC rules require a penalty kick tie break. The Lakers shot first in the tiebreak scoring on four of their five shots. Caitlin LaPier,
Taylor Messina (Smithtown/Smithtown East),
Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley), and
Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) scored in the first four slots for Oneonta setting up a clinching shot from Lyden, who buried the goal.
The Red Dragons look to use the momentum from the tiebreak win when they return to action tomorrow when they travel to Cortland.
