Women's Soccer Picks up Second Win

Berk scores first career goal

Sept. 20, 2014

Meadeville, Pa. -  The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team picked up its second win of the season Saturday afternoon when it snapped the six game winning streak of the Allegheny Gators in Meadeville, Pa. Oneonta used a two-goal second half, capped by a Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) one-timer to bring home the win.

Strategic substitutions by head coach Liz McGrail provided just the sparks the Red Dragons needed. "It was nice to see players come off the bench and impact the outcome of the game," said McGrail. "Momentum changed in our favor after we subber."

Rachel Berk (Eastchester/Easterchester) may have provided the biggest spark just minutes into the second half. The freshman, fresh off the bench, scored her first career goal in the 52nd minute beating the Gator keeper to a 50/50 ball set up by classmate Shannen Gillespie (West Islip/West Islip) to knot the game at one.

Just under 20 minutes later, The Red and White were back at it. This time Distin one-timed a feed from Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) 15 yards out, netting what proved to be the game-winner.

The Red Dragons fired 10 total shots on the afternoon, six of them on target. Distin, Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South), and Taylor Messina (Smithtown/Smithtown East) had a pair of shots each. Kelly Murphy, who entered the game after halftime, made a trio of saves to pick up the win.

The Red and White hit the road again next weekend when they travel to Oswego on Friday for a 4 p.m. contest, and Cortland on Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
