The SUNY Oneonta baseball team played a doubleheader versus Mount St. Mary yesterday at Dutchess Stadium in Wappinger Falls. Three Oneonta pitchers combined for a five-hit, 5-0 shutout and game 1 before falling in the nightcap 7-6.
Sophomore Kyle Jordan (4 IP) and freshmen Danny Rodriguez (2 IP) and David Wright (1 IP) combined for the shutout in game 1. Jordan recorded a pair of strikeouts while allowing four hits. Rodriguez allowed one hit in his stint while Wright struck out two batters in the seventh, as he retired all three batters he faced in the final inning.
Oneonta jumped on the Mount Saint Mary starter in the first inning with four runs. The big hit in the inning came from junior Nate Eastman who cleared the bases with a two-out triple to left center field. Freshman Mike Cruz then followed with a double to center field to drive in Eastman with the final run of the first.
Cruz drove in Oneonta's final run of the game in the sixth inning, as he finished with a pair of hits and two runs batted in. Eastman and freshman
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) each collected two hits in the game as well.
In the second game, the Knights scored a run in the first inning and added three more runs in the second to lead 4-1 after two innings of play. Oneonta's run came in the second inning when junior Jon Halligan tripled to center field to lead off the inning and came into score on a ground out by freshman Billy Riedel.
Oneonta scored two runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3. Chris Orlando walked to start the inning and went to second on a single by Casey Kerdesky. On a double steal attempt, the catcher threw the ball away, which allowed Orlando to score. Kerdesky scored from second on a single by Halligan.
The Knights scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth, as they held a 7-4 lead after five innings.
The Red Dragons rallied in the seventh, but came up one run short. Cruz led off the inning with a single to right center field and came home on a one-out triple to left center field by Orlando. Orlando scored when pinch hitter, Dylan Stamile, grounded out to second base.
Oneonta will host Oswego this weekend for a SUNYAC three-game series beginning Friday afternoon at 3pm with the single game of the set. The two will complete the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
