Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball outdueled by Oswego State 2-1

In a game that matched two of the SUNYAC's best left handed pitchers, it was SUNY Oneonta's Steve Ascher that was outdueled today by Oswego's Brendyn Karinchak 2-1.  Karinchak went the distance and struck out 13 Oneonta batters while Ascher went seven innings and struck out six Oswego batters.

Oswego's (13-5/5-3 SUNYAC) scored its runs in the top of the first inning of today's game.  Back-to-back triples by Dan Saccocio and Scott Buniak to open the game gave Oswego a 1-0 lead.  Mike McMullen grounded out two batters later to score Buniak for the 2-0 lead.

Karinchak was perfect through the first four innings before a throwing error by McMullen allowed Oneonta's first base runner to reach.  Senior Christopher Orlando was the beneficiary of the error, as he was able to get to second base to start the fifth.  He then stole third with one out, but was stranded there after a strikeout and a line out.

Freshman catcher, Billy Riedel, broke up the no-no by leading off the sixth inning with a sharp single to right field.  Sophomore LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) then laid down a bunt, which was thrown away at first base and allowed the runners to get into scoring position with no outs.

Leadoff hitter Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) then reached on a fielder's choice, which drove in Riedel from third.  Gizzarelli was out on the play.  Kies was then picked off at first base before David Wright grounded out to second base to end the inning for Oneonta.

Oswego finished with six hits including two each by Saccocio and Buniak.

Karinchak ran his record to 3-1 while Ascher fell to 4-2.

The two squads will complete its weekend three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
