Softball splits doubleheader with Rensselaer

Win game two, 4-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Oneonta, N.Y. - SUNY Oneonta softball takes one of two from visiting Renssealer on a cold, blustery afternoon on Red Dragon softball field today. The Red Dragons won the second game in exciting fashion 4-3 after falling in the first 8-2.

Junior Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) earned her sixth win of the season and classmate Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River/Pearl River) picked up her second save as the two combined for a seven hit outing, allowing three runs in the process.

Renssealer (10-8) took the lead in the first inning scoring two runs before Oneonta answered back in the bottom of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Kristyn Neroda (Pearl River/Pearl River) laid down a perfectly placed bunt single to get aboard the base paths. Up to the plate stepped freshman Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who roped the ball, that hit half way up the centerfield fence, for a stand up double to bring home run number one. After a ground out that advanced O'Gorman to third, she would score on an error that placed Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) on first base. Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston) would single up the middle to move Whittam up to second followed by a Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) single to right center that brought Whittam home for the third run.

Oneonta (15-5) would add an insurance run in the fifth to put the Red Dragons up 4-2. With two outs, Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) became the second player to hit the outfield fence, this time the left side, and would earn a stand up double. Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) brought Cuevas in for the fourth run of the game on a double to left center.

The Engineers would make things interesting as they scored one run in the top of the sixth to move to within 4-3.

After Oneonta went three up three down in the bottom of the inning, O'Flynn, who had entered in the sixth, went to work. Rensselaer's lead-off hitter in the seventh, Tori Hunt singled to right center. She was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then third on a ground out. With two outs, O'Flynn was able to get Morgan Ten Eyck to pop out in foul territory to first baseman Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) to preserve the victory.

In the first game of the afternoon, Rensselaer's ace pitcher, Kristina Weltzin allowed six hits and two earned runs while striking out nine batters for her seventh win of the season.

The Engineers would take a 3-2 lead after one. Brocco tripled to right center, bringing home Whittam, who had earned a lead-off walk. Lichtenstein would single up the middle to score Brocco.

Renssealer would add three more runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to win 8-2. Taylor Ten Eyck homered to right field to bring home both runs in the seventh inning.

Oneonta's next game is Thursday, April 10, when they host King's College for a game beginning at 3:00 p.m.
