The SUNY Oneonta baseball team banged out 13 hits today en route to picking up an 8-4 victory against Plattsburgh in SUNYAC action. The win gave Oneonta (7-13/3-1 SUNYAC) the series, as they took two-of-three from the Cardinals, who fell to 8-14 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
Leading the offense today was junior Matt Mastroianni, who went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, and senior Christopher Orlando, who was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Orlando extended his current hit streak to eight games where he is hitting .462 with 17 runs batted in.
Oneonta also got a second straight solid outing from junior Alex Mastrianni (2-5), as he pitched 8-2/3 innings in picking up his second straight win. He allowed five hits and four runs; one earned, and struck out three Cardinals.
Plattsburgh scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning. Nicholas Lupo reached on a fielding error by the left fielder and went to second. After a walk to Frank Buksa with one out, designated hitter, Jeremy Rodriguez singled up the middle to drive in Lupo.
Oneonta came back to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, as they loaded the bases for a second straight inning. Freshman Billy Riedel scored Oneonta's first run when he came in on a fielder's choice. Mastroianni drove in the second run with a single through the left side, which scored
LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) from third, who walked earlier on four pitches.
Plattsburgh manufactured a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. Chris Pescetti singled, and was sacrificed to second base and came around to score on an RBI single by Mat Chavez.
After Oneonta took the lead, 3-2, in the fifth, the Red Dragons plated three runs including a pair with two outs. Gizzarelli reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Casey Kerdesky, who led off the inning with a double down the right field line. The big hit came off the bat of Orlando, who hit a two-out single to left field that brought in both
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) and David Wright.
Plattsburgh scored two runs in the seventh, but Oneonta came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin of victory.
Oneonta will travel to Mount St. Mary's for a Tuesday doubleheader beginning at 4pm.
