Softball sweeps Oswego in doubleheader

Red Dragons win game 2 in five innings 9-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Oneonta, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta softball team remains undefeated in the conference as they swept a doubleheader in the first home games of the season over SUNY Oswego. The Red Dragons won the first game 5-3 and the second 9-1 in five innings.
 
In the second game of the day, the Red Dragons took control early as they scored one, five, one and two runs in the first four innings respectively.
 
Sophomore Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) started things off for Oneonta with a single to left field, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Whittam would score on a Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston) ground out to the shortstop.
 
The second inning saw five runs come across the plate for the Red Dragons. After a single and error Whittam doubles to left center to bring the first two runs of the inning across the plate. Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) reached on the second error of the inning, plating Whittam, who had stole third. Junior Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) laced a shot down the third base line for a triple bring the fourth run in and Brianna Calby (South Huntington/Walt Whitman), Rivera's replacement, would score on Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore)'s single.
 
Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) earned her fifth win of the season pitching four innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.
 
The opening game of the afternoon saw Oswego taking an early 1-0 lead after the top of the third. The Lakers' Laura Kahn hit a bunt single and moved to second when Jessica Terrano was hit by a pitch. Dee Apps singled to right center to bring home Oswego's first run of the game.
 
Oneonta countered by scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Whittam bunted her way on. With two outs, Whittam stole second and scored on Lichtenstein's single to nleft center. Marzillo beat out a slow roller to the shortstop to put runners on first and second. Freshman Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) stepped up to the plate and roped a double over the centerfielders head to bring home the last two runs of the inning to give Oneonta a 3-1 lead.
 
Oswego would score one run in the next two innings but Oneonta would answer each of those with a run of their own to keep the score at a two run difference.
 
Freshman Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) pitched six innings, scattering ten hits and striking out nine in the process. Katie O'Flynn (Pearl River/Pearl River) came in and earned her first save of the year with one inning of work, getting two ground outs and a fly out to end the game.
 
Whittam went 5-for-6 on the afternoon, including two doubles, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) went 2-for-3 in the second game with a double.
 
The Red Dragons will play again tomorrow, April 6, when they take on SUNY Cortland in the postponed games from Friday. The first pitch is set to be thrown at 12 noon.
