The SUNY Oneonta baseball will control its own destiny tomorrow when they host New Paltz for a doubleheader, as the Red Dragons look to secure a SUNYAC tournament berth. Oneonta was defeated today by Brockport, 10-5, which means Oneonta needs at least one win against New Paltz tomorrow to earn the fourth and final spot in the tournament. The Red Dragons would hold the tiebreakers against both New Paltz and Plattsburgh, whom they would be tied with for fourth place.
In today's game, three runs in the bottom of the fifth and six more runs in the bottom of the sixth for Brockport (22-12/11-7 SUNYAC) gave the Golden Eagles control of the game.
Oneonta (11-23/6-10 SUNYAC) actually held a 3-0 lead after two innings of play. Freshman
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) walked to lead off the first and went to third on a single through the left side by classmate
David Wright (Oneonta/Oneonta), who went to second base on the throw to put two runners in scoring position. Junior
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem) then grounded out to shortstop, which scored Kies and moved Wright to third base. Senior
Christopher Orlando (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) then drove in Wright with a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the second inning,
Jon Halligan (Cornwallville/Cairo Durham) was hit by a pitch and then was moved to second base by freshman catcher
Wayne Baker (Port Washington/Paul D. Schreiber).
LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) then singled through the right side to drive in Halligan from second base.
Wright finished the game with four of Oneonta's eight hits in the game to lead the offense.
Yesterday, Oneonta dropped the first two games of the three-game series. The Red Dragons lost game 1, 18-5, and then fell in game 2, 10-1.
The first pitch for tomorrow's doubleheader against New Paltz is scheduled for a 12pm. Oneonta has ace
Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) scheduled to be on the mound.
