Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball sweeps New Paltz and clinches SUNYAC berth

The SUNY Oneonta baseball team controlled its own destiny entering today's doubleheader with New Paltz, who was also looking to capture the final spot for this year's SUNYAC Tournament.  When the final out was recorded, it was Oneonta (13-23/8-10 SUNYAC) that came away with a sweep of New Paltz (14-22/6-12 SUNYAC) to secure the No. 4 seed where they will now face rival SUNY Cortland on Friday beginning at noon.  This year's double elimination tournament will be hosted by Cortland.

The visitors scored single runs in the first and second innings to take an early lead.  Richard Guido singled in Steven Morse in the first inning while Tyler Bell hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Mike Sparacino in the second.

Oneonta got a run back in the bottom of the third inning on a David Wright (Oneonta/Oneonta) hit a one-out single to center field that knocked in Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) from second base.  Kies hit a single to left field and went to second base on a wild pitch.  Wright finished the game with a pair of hits.

Wright got things going for Oneonta in the sixth inning when he led off with a hustle double on a hit that landed fair on the left field line.  Wright went to third base on a wild pitch and Christopher Orlando (Putnam Valley/Putnam Valley) was hit by a pitch with one out to give the Red Dragons runners at the corners.

Orlando then stole second base to set the table for sophomore Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)), who delivered a single to left field that drove in both runners to give Oneonta a 3-2 lead.

Sophomore pitcher, Kyle Jordan (Levittown/Division), went the distance for Oneonta to pick up his fourth win of the season.  Jordan, who allowed seven hits and two runs in the first two innings, settled down and allowed only one hit the rest of the way.  Jordan recorded four strikeouts in the game.

New Paltz starter Andrew Grann took the loss.  Grann pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing three runs and four hits while recording five strikeouts.

In game 2, Oneonta scored one run in the first and four more in the third inning en route to a 5-2 victory.  The runs were more than enough for starter, Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck), who threw 6-2/3 scoreless innings allowing only three hits while striking out eight batters.

The big hit in the third inning was a one-out single by senior Stephen Provenzano (Islip/Islip) that drove in two runs.  Provenzano eventually scored on a single by Kies that gave Oneonta a 5-0 lead.

Kies and freshman catcher, Wayne Baker (Port Washington/Paul D. Schreiber), each had two hits in the game for the Red Dragons.
