Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball takes two-of-three from Fredonia

The SUNY Oneonta and Fredonia State baseball teams finally got a chance to play its three-game series today, as the weather forced a suspension of game 1 and a postponement of games 2 & 3 back on Mar. 29.  The two squads squared off at Houghton College and Oneonta came away with a pair of wins to win the series while staying in the playoff picture in the SUNYAC.

Oneonta (11-20/6-7) won game 1, 6-0, which was the completion of the suspended game, which was in the bottom of the seventh inning when the game was halted.  The Red Dragons came back and won game 2, 5-3, before falling in the series finale 1-0.

Oneonta scored two runs in the eighth and added a single run in the ninth for the final of 6-0 in game 1.  LJ Gizzarelli (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) doubled in Casey Kerdesky and came around to score on an RBI single by Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) in the eighth inning.  Gizzarelli then reached on an infield single that drove in Dylan Stamile for Oneonta's run in the ninth.

Junior Mickey Silberfeld threw three scoreless innings to pick up his first collegiate save.  Junior Steve Ascher, who threw the first six scoreless innings back on Mar. 29, was rewarded with his fifth win of the season.

Gizzarelli finished the game with three hits to lead the offense.  Kies, Kerdesky, Billy Riedel and Jon Halligan each collected two hits in the game.

Fredonia scored a single run in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead in game 2.

The Red Dragons bounced back with three runs in the top of the third inning to gain the lead.  Freshman David Wright drove in the first two runs with a double while Matt Mastroianni drove in the third run on a ground out to shortstop.

The Blue Devils came right back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning with two runs.

Oneonta scored the eventual winning runs in the top of the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double by Nate Eastman and a sacrifice fly by Mike Cruz that drove Eastman in from third base.

Sophomore Kyle Jordan went the distance allowing five hits and striking out two in picking up his third win of the season.

In today's final game, the Red Dragons managed only four hits in the loss including a pair by Wright.

Oneonta will play its final five conference games this weekend, starting Friday at Brockport, as the two teams open its three-game series.  The Red Dragons will finish the weekend on Sunday at home, as they make up its postponed doubleheader against New Paltz.
