The SUNY Oneonta baseball team battled in game 2 today, but came up on the short end of an 11-4 score, as the host Red Dragons were swept by its rival SUNY Cortland today. The visitors won game 1, 17-0, as Cortland (25-7/13-2 SUNYAC) clinched the SUNYAC regular season title with the sweep.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning of game 2, Oneonta (9-19/4-6 SUNYAC) pulled to within one run on the strength of a two-run home run by senior Stephen Provenzano. For Provenzano, it was his first collegiate round-tripper.
Cortland scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 5-2 lead. Cortland's run in the fifth came in on a ground out by Anthony Iacomini, which scored Donny Castaldo, who led off the inning with a walk. Mitch Hollander singled in Chris Jackson in the sixth to account for the run in that inning. Jackson hit a one-out triple down the right field line.
Oneonta got a run back in the bottom of the seventh when junior Matt Mastroianni drove in sophomore Joe Franke from second base with a single through the right side. Franke hit a double down the right field line with one out.
Cortland scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to increase its lead to 7-3. Max Rosing scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch while Tim Panetta drove in the second run on a bunt single to second base. Panetta would finish the game with three hits and five runs batted in.
Oneonta's final run of the came in the bottom of the eighth inning when freshman
Wayne Baker (Port Washington/Paul D. Schreiber) drove a two-out single to right center field to drive in Nate Eastman from third. Eastman led off the inning with a single up the middle. Eastman finished the game with a pair of hits.
Brandon Serio pitched six innings and ran his record to 7-2 this spring. Serio struck out nine batters and allowed four hits and two runs. Tyler Brien finished the last 1-1/3 to pick up his first save of the season. Brien retired all four batters he faced including two via the strikeout.
Freshman Robert Marks had his best outing of the season, as he went 7-1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, five earned, while striking out seven batters.
In game 1 today, Cortland wasted no time, as they jumped all over Oneonta starter, Eastman, for six runs in the top of the first inning. Cortland added four runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and the final five runs in the seventh inning for the final. Cortland collected 20 hits in the game led by Jackson, who had three hits. P.J. Rinaldi and Anthony Simon each had three runs batted in.
Oneonta will be back in action again on Monday, as they travel to face Fredonia at Houghton College. The two teams will have to first finish its suspended game from Mar. 29 before they can play the doubleheader part of the three-game series. Game 1 was in the bottom of the seventh inning with Oneonta leading 3-0.
