Softball gets tripped up by New Paltz on the road

Game 2 was suspended in the 3rd due to rain

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The SUNY Oneonta softball team traveled to New Paltz and got tripped up in the first game 3-0. The second game of the doubleheader was suspended in the third inning with the Red Dragons in the lead 6-3 due to rain and darkness.

In the opening game of the afternoon, New Paltz (6-11/3-2 SUNYAC) got two runs in the second inning and an insurance run in the fifth to defeat Oneonta (15-8/5-2 SUNYAC).

The Red Dragons had an opportunity in the first inning to get on the board when they loaded the bases on a hit batter and singles by Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) and Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland), but were unable to bring a run across. For the game, Oneonta left seven runners on base.

The second game will be picked up from where it ended on April 22nd starting at 5:00 p.m. at New Paltz.

Oneonta got started early in game two as they scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) had a lead-off single and moved to second on a sacrifice bun by Jennifer Brocco (Kingston/Kingston). Lichtenstein doubled to bring Whittam home and would score on a fielding error. Rivera scored the third run of the inning on a Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) triple.

The Hawks would get one run back before Oneonta scored three more in the second to make it 6-1. The Red Dragons forced two pitching changes by New Paltz in the inning. Five hits and one error would allow the three runs to come in. Brianna Calby (South Huntington/Walt Whitman), Brocco, Lictenstein, Rivera and Cuevas each had singles to do the damage.

Oneonta will travel to Brockport on Sunday, April 13th, for a doubleheader that starts at 1:00 p.m.
