Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball holds off Fredonia 87-83 in overtime

Junior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South) scored six of his game high 29 points in overtime, as the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team defeated Fredonia 87-83 tonight in SUNYAC men's action.  Three Red Dragons reached double figures in the contest including freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) and senior Dan Lee (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa), who added 18 and 15 points respectively.

Oneonta (10-11/7-7 SUNYAC) matched its largest lead at 55-44 on a jumper by Mager at the 13:33 mark of the second half.  The Red Dragons' other 11-point lead came early in the first half when they jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first 5:23 of the game.

Both times Fredonia (5-15/2-11) battled back including 11 unanswered points to tie the game at 55 apiece on a basket by senior Tyrone Clark with 10:16 remaining in the game.  It was the first tie since the 16:36 mark of the opening half at 9-9.  Clark finished the game with 28 points to lead the Blue Devils.

In the final 10 minutes of the game, the largest lead was four points and that came when McElroy made a layup for Oneonta to give them a 65-61 lead with just over four minutes remaining.  McElroy also put the Red Dragons ahead 72-70 with 1:16 to go.

Sophomore Robert Lyles made 1-of-2 free throws to get the Blue Devils to within one point with just under one minute left.  Lyles, who scored 24 points in the game, then had an opportunity to put Fredonia ahead, but made only 1-of-2 free throws with three seconds on the clock and the scored was tied at 72-72.

A last second attempt for Oneonta was off the mark, which forced the extra period of play.

Oneonta jumped out quickly in the overtime, as they took an 80-75 lead in the first 1:23.  Oneonta made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Both teams shot extremely well including the opening five minutes where neither team missed from the floor.  Oneonta finished the game at 51 percent while Fredonia shot 45 percent including 57 percent in the second half.  Both teams made 12 three-point baskets in the game.  Clark made six from behind the arc for the Blue Devils while Mager had five from long distance for Oneonta.

The Red Dragons will host Buffalo State tomorrow in a key SUNYAC match up, as both teams are battling for a spot in the conference tournament.  The game begins at 4pm.
