A four-run first inning for the Washington & Lee Generals helped lift them past the SUNY Oneonta baseball team today in Virginia 8-2. Oneonta (1-2) collected eight hits in the game including a pair of doubles, as they completed its season opening weekend of 2014.
Washington & Lee (5-2) scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first. Their first run came across after an outfield error allowed a runner to score from second base. The other three runs came via a sacrifice fly, a double and an infield single.
Oneonta scored its first run in the top of the second with two outs. Freshman
Casey Kerdesky (Cornwall/Cornwall) singled and advanced to second base on an error by the center fielder. He was followed by an RBI single off the bat from classmate
Billy Riedel (East Northport/John Glenn).
The Generals added a single run in the second and two more in the third and, in the process, chased Oneonta starter, freshman
Robert Marks (Brooklyn/Brooklyn Technical) from the game with one out in the third. Marks was touched up for seven hits and six earned runs in his first collegiate outing. He walked four and struck out two in the 18 batters he faced.
Kerdesky hit an RBI single in the fourth inning to drive in freshman
Nate Eastman (Oneonta/Oneonta), who hit a one-out double before going to third base on a fly out to right field by sophomore
Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)).
Eastman and Kerdesky each had a pair of hits to pace Oneonta.
The Red Dragons will not be in action again until Saturday, Mar. 8 when they are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Messiah.
