The SUNY Oneonta baseball team nearly pulled off a split of a doubleheader today with No. 20 Johns Hopkins, but a ninth inning rally fell short in a 6-3 loss in the second game. The Red Dragons dropped today's first game 18-7, as the two teams squared off at the Cal Ripken Baseball Complex in Aberdeen, MD.
Oneonta trailed 6-1 entering the final inning of game two before putting some hits together to score a pair of runs for the final. The inning started with a triple to right center field by freshman
David Wright (Oneonta/Oneonta). Senior Chris Orlando then singled through the left side to drive in Wright. Orlando went to second on a single through the right side by
Nate Eastman (Oneonta/Oneonta) before heading to third on a flight out to left field by freshman
Billy Riedel (East Northport/John Glenn). Orlando scored on an infield single by junior
Jon Halligan (Cornwallville/Cairo Durham). Hopkins relief pitcher, Justin Drechsel, struck out the next two batters to close out the game and pick up his first save of the season.
Hopkins (4-0) carried a 3-0 lead into the sixth before Oneonta scored its first run of the game. With one out, freshman
Casy Kies (Apalachin/Vestal) reached on an infield hit. He then stole second and third base before coming home on a single up the middle by leadoff batter
Matt Mastroianni (Somers/North Salem).
Junior
Alex Mastrianni (Valatie/Ichabod Crane) went six innings allowing eight hits and four runs, three earned, while striking out two in the loss.
In the opening game today, Hopkins ripped open a 2-2 score with seven runs in the fourth inning. They added one in the fifth, four in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh en route to the lopsided win.
Oneonta did add four runs in their half of the ninth inning, as they collected 11 hits in the game.
The Red Dragons scored single runs in the first, third and eighth innings. Kies and sophomore first baseman,
Dylan Stamile (Long Beach, NY/Bowie (Austin, TX)), each had two hits in the game. Each hitter had a double in the game.
Junior
Steve Ascher (Cutchogue/Mattituck) only made it through the fourth inning on the mound for Oneonta. Three fielding errors led to five unearned runs in the game. Ascher recorded six strikeouts in his four innings of work.
Oneonta will head to Florida for three doubleheaders this week beginning on Thursday with a pair versus Penn State Abington in Winter Haven.
