Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

McElroy and Mager lead men's basketball past New Paltz

Freshman Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) exploded for a season high 32 points tonight in leading the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to an 87-75 win in SUNYAC men's action.  The win allowed the Red Dragons to jump over Oswego into fourth place in the conference with two games remaining in the regular season.  Oneonta (12-11/9-7 SUNYAC) is hoping to secure one of the six spots in the conference tournament that begins with first round games on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

McElroy had a solid all-around effort tonight adding five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal.  He hit 10-of-14 from the field including 3-of-5 from behind the arc while making 9-of-11 free throws.  McElroy scored the first 11 points for Oneonta in the game, as he gave the Red Dragons the lead for good at 11-8 with his second three-pointer.

The second story tonight was junior Zach Mager (New City/Clarkstown South), who scored his 1,000 career point late in the first half when he buried a three-pointer to put Oneonta up 35-23.  Mager finished the game with 19 points to give him 1,009 through 63 collegiate games with Oneonta.

Oneonta shot 53 percent from the floor in the opening half, as they held a 44-31 lead at halftime.  They finished the game shooting just under 52 percent, which included 9-of-19 from long range.  Oneonta led by as many as 16 points late in the second half.

New Paltz (6-17/3-13 SUNYAC) had four players in double figures led by sophomore Keegan Donovan's 15 points.  Classmate Alex Perlman added 14 points while graduate student, Nick Taldi, and sophomore, Kevin Roach, each had 10 points.

The Red Dragons will wrap up the regular season next weekend on the road, as they travel to SUNY Geneseo and Brockport.
