Women's basketball pulls out weekend split in the North Country

Exactly one week after overcoming a 19-point deficit to defeat SUNY Geneseo, the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team turned another 19-point deficit into a five-point win today.  Today's victim was SUNY Potsdam, who led by 19 points with just over 18 minutes remaining in the game.  Senior Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) scored a season high 19 points to lead the Red Dragons second half surge that saw them score a season high 50 points in the second half.  Schilling also added a team high eight rebounds while dishing out three assists.

Senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) and junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) contributed 15 points and 11 points respectively.

The turning point in today contest came at the 15:35 mark of the second half when sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) made a layup, which started a run of 18 unanswered points that gave Oneonta (14-5/8-4 SUNYAC) a 42-41 lead at the 8:38 mark.
Potsdam (4-14/2-9 SUNYAC) regained the lead momentarily at 46-42 before Oneonta took the lead for good with an 18-5 run that gave them its largest lead of the game at 60-51 with 2:34 remaining in the game.

The Bears did get as close as four points in the final minute of play, but the Red Dragons made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch including 4-of-4 by Crawford.

Plattsburgh 80, SUNY Oneonta 75
Despite three players in double figures, the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team came up on the short end of an 80-75 decision at Plattsburgh last in a key SUNYAC game, as the regular season winds down.  The loss for the Red Dragons drops them to 13-5 overall and 7-4 in the SUNYAC while the Cardinals move to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in conference play.

Crawford scored a career high 26 points, which included six baskets from long range.  Schilling added 19 points while Longto scored 10 points.

Last night's game came down to the final minutes, as the two teams just about matched basket-for-basket over the final seven minutes.  Over that span, there were four ties and four lead changes, the last coming when Brittany Marshall made a three-pointer to give Plattsburgh a 74-71 lead with 1:49 remaining.

Oneonta didn't go easily down the stretch.  Trailing 78-72 with 23 seconds left, Crawford buried a three to cut the lead to three points with seven seconds to go.  The Red Dragons fouled right away, but Devona Paul converted a pair of free throws to ice the game with five seconds remaining.

Oneonta trailed 41-34 at halftime and continued to trail through the first 10 minutes of the second half before a layup by senior Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River/Pearl River) tied the game at 58 apiece with 7:13 left in the game.

Oneonta scored the first six points of the game including five by Crawford, to lead early.  Plattsburgh countered with 10 unanswered points to take its first lead of the contest.  Oneonta gained the lead back at 14-12 on a three by Crawford at the 11:42 mark.

A pair of free throws by senior Kathleen Payne gave the Cardinals a 27-26 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.  Plattsburgh outscored Oneonta 14-9 over the final stretch to take a 41-34 lead into halftime.  Payne finished the game with 35 points to lead the Cardinals.

Oneonta will travel to Oswego on Tuesday night to face the Lakers beginning at 6pm.
