The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team defeated Roanoke College, 56-39, yesterday to earn a weekend split at the Daytona Beach Shootout. The Red Dragons, who were upended by Stevenson on Friday, enter the winter break with an overall record of 6-3.

Oneonta 56, Roanoke 39The Red Dragons built itself a 29-15 lead at halftime enroute to the 17-point victory against Roanoke (4-5). Oneonta outrebounded the Maroons 52-27 including 18-5 on the offensive glass. They also outscored Roanoke 18-2 in the paint while Oneonta's bench came up with a 29-13 advantage.

The two teams exchanged buckets to open the game before Oneonta ran off 10 unanswered to assume control of the contest. A three-pointer by junior
Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) started the run and another long range shot by freshman Samantha Lisakatos ended the run. Cohen was the lone Red Dragon in double figures in the game, finishing with 13 points.

A layup by Cohen gave Oneonta its largest lead early in the second half. The Maroons would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

Sophomores
Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) and
Brianna Spector (Philadelphia, PA/Upper Dublin) along with freshman
Tyra Harrison (Baldwin/Baldwin) led the attack off the bench combining for 24 points.

Juniors
Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) and
Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) each collected eight rebounds to lead Oneonta.

Oneonta converted 13-of-18 free throws including a perfect 4-of-4 from both Cohen and Spector.

Stevenson 67, Oneonta 54A 47-point second half by Stevenson (7-2) erased a two-point halftime deficit, as they overtook Oneonta in the opening game of the Shootout on Friday morning. Cohen led Oneonta with 15 points while senior
Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Adams came off the bench to contribute nine points on three makes from long distance.

There were six lead changes in the opening half and 13 for the game. A three-pointer by Harrison at the 11:13 mark of the second half tied the game for the last time at 35 apiece. The Mustangs then put together a 16-5 run over the next four minutes to take the lead for good.

A three-pointer by Adams got Oneonta back to within seven points with six minutes remaining, but that would be as close as the Red Dragons would be for the rest of the game.

Price buried a three to give Oneonta an early 7-2 advantage before Stevenson countered with six unanswered to gain an 8-7 lead. With just under six minutes to go in the opening half, the Mustangs held a four-point lead at 18-14. Oneonta closed the half with an 8-2 spurt to take a 22-20 lead into the break.

Oneonta will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 6 when they travel to Oswego to open the second semester. The Red Dragons are currently 1-1 in the SUNYAC.
