Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Red Dragons Fall to Hartwick

Slip to 2-3 on season

December 2, 2014

The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball squad fell to West Street rival Hartwick College 72-61 Tuesday night in Dewar Arena.

The Red and White put together a strong first half led by senior point guard Frankie Kelly (Brewster/Kennedy Catholic)'s dozen points on 4-of-6 shooting. The captain started the scoring for the Red Dragons with a three-pointer. Junior Jackson Zuvic (Cold Spring/Haldane) drained a triple at the 16:09 mark to propel Oneonta to its first lead of the game at 10-9.

The Red Dragons would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the first stanza, leading by as many as eight. Junior Mikey McElroy (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs) capped off a capped off a 10-2 run spanning three and a half minutes with a free through and a layup to lift his team to their game-high eight point advantage.  The forward dropped 10 points in the opening frame.

The second half would not go as well for the hosts. Shooting just 29.4% from the field, Oneonta was unable to hold on. Senior forward Kareem Williams (Bronx/IN-Tech Academy) provided a spark for the Red and White in the middle portions of the half fighting hard in the paint where he registered an emphatic block on Hartiwck's 6-foot 9-inch Matt Wilson before doing the dirty work down low on the offensive end. The Hawks responded with a quick 6-0 spurt from which the Red Dragons could not regroup.

The Red and White shot 35.5% from the field, including 21.3% from three-point land. They were grateful from the charity stripe, making 11 of 15 attempts.

The men are back in action on Friday night when they travel to Potsdam for the SUNYAC opener.
