Schenectady, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta volleyball squad got back to work Tuesday night in Schenectady following a 10 day break from competition. A 3-0 loss at the Bomber Invitational on Sept. 5 and a thrilling 3-2 win at the Union Interleague Challenge just a week later set up this rubber match between the Red Dragons and the Dutchwomen. Oneonta would fall 3-1 in this third meeting.
After falling 25-22 in the opening set, the Red and White ran to an early 5-0 advantage to open the second set powered by a pair of kills and a block from junior
Hannah O'Neil (Brookhaven/Bellport). A
Jill Darpino (Endicott/Union Endicott) kill to extend the Red Dragon lead to 9-3 forced Union into a timeout out of which Oneonta would build up an 11-3 advantage. Darpino didn't finish there, the junior fueled a six point run with a three consecutive kills. From that point, Oneonta cruised to a a 25-15 second set win capped off by a
Paige Carpluk (Yaphank/Bellport) kill set up by
Karly Greco (East Patchogue/Bellport).
Looking to capitalize on the momentum of the second set win, O'Neil got the Red and White started off right in with a kill from Greco to start the third set, however neither squad was able to take hold the game. No team saw a lead of more than three in a set that saw 11 ties and three lead changes. Â The Red Dragons held the set-high three point lead on two occasions, but fell in the set 26-24. The Red Dragons fell 25-22 in the fourth set.
Darpino led the Red Dragon attack with 20 kills, while Carpluk recorded 16 of her own to accompany her team-leading 25 digs. Greco dished out a team-high 23 assists, while
Jessica Pelaccio (Verplanck/Hendrick Hudson) handed out 21.
The 11-9 Red Dragons return to SUNYAC play this weekend in Cortland where they will square off against Fredonia on Friday and Geneseo and Oswego on Saturday.
