Women's Tennis Claims Second Straight Win

Red Dragons drop St. John Fisher 9-0

10/03/14

Pittsford, NY – The SUNY Oneonta women's tennis team took a three hour ride to Pittsford, NY to battle The St. John Fisher Cardinals.  The Red Dragons made it a successful excursion by winning their second consecutive, 9-0 dual match win.

In doubles competition none of the three starting teams were ever threatened.  Collectively the doubles squads only dropped three games.  Number one team of Michelle Spencer (Homer/Homer)/Brynn Sussman (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) won at love 8-0.  The number two tandem of Emily Denney/Kelly Gochen won 8-2 and finally the number three flight of Keri Picciochi (Flushing/The Mary Louis Acamdemy)/Christine Santarsiero (Rye Brook/Blind Brook) surrendered just one game on route to an 8-1 landslide.

With a comfortable 3-0 lead going into the singles competition the Red Dragons kept the foot on the petal and won all the contests to complete the shutout.  The only drama came out the number 5 and 6 flights.  Number five Denney got off to a slow start and lost the first set in a tiebreaker but recovered in the second set and produced more winners and kept her opponent on the defensive securing a 6-4 win to deadlock the match at 1 set a piece.  The super tiebreak was back and forth but Denney came up with some great volleys and put the match away winning 10-8 in the breaker. Santarsiero, not to be out done by her teammate, also lost the first set 3-6.  She settled down playing more consistently in the second set coming back from 2-4 to gain the set 6-4.  The super tiebreaker saw Santarsiero go down early 1-4 but took 9 out of the next 10 points and finally clinched the match with her teammates at courtside rooting her on to seal the team shutout victory.

The Red Dragons are finally at full squad and healthy just in time for the upcoming SUNYAC Championships.  They have the weekend off before preparing for their tournament match up where they hope to avenge a defeat from SUNY Brockport earlier in the season.  That match will take place on neutral ground at the Binghamton Tennis Center on Friday, October 10th at 7 PM.
