Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer remains unbeaten with win at SUNY Geneseo

The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team completed its weekend sweep of SUNYAC road games today with its 2-1 victory at SUNY Geneseo.  In today's match, the Red Dragons scored a pair of first half goals and thenheld off a late surge by the hosts to stay unbeaten on the season.

No. 5 Oneonta is now 9-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the SUNYAC.  The 11-game unbeaten streak is tied for the fifth longest all-time for the program.  The Red Dragons are also unbeaten in its last 16 conference games (13-0-3).

Today's first goal came in the ninth minute by sophomore Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City), who scored in yesterday's win at Brockport.  The assist came from junior Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee), as Purtell beat the keeper with a shot along the ground from the top of the box.

Freshman Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) gave Oneonta a 2-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the 37th minute.  Santangelo dribbled past the keeper, who came out, before putting a shot into the back of the goal.

Geneseo's (6-5-1/2-2-0) scored its only goal in the 79th minute on a penalty kick.  Connor Beisner converted the attempt for the Blue Knights.

Senior Daniel DeBottis (Cicero/C-NS) made seven stops in goal for Oneonta, as he raised his season record to 2-0-1.

Oneonta held a 12-11 shot advantage while earning 11 corner kicks while surrendering none to Geneseo.

"Another great road win in unsavory playing conditions," said head coach Iain Byrne.  "We played well and our two young strikers, Hans and Cory, took their goals very well.  Anthony Passiatore (South Setauket/Ward Melville) marshaled our reshuffled back line superbly and we are off to another great start in the conference."
