The SUNY Oneonta women's swimming & diving team opened its 2014-15 dual-meet schedule at home today with a convincing victory against visiting Oswego. The meet was a lopsided affair with the Red Dragons coming away with a 131 - 82 victory.
The opening event of the afternoon was the 200-yard medley relay and with a total time of 1:57.27, which was 3.5 seconds ahead of the second place finishers, also from Oneonta, the team of seniors
Carly Cahill (Troy/Troy),
Hillary Chocko (Queensbury/Queensbury) and
Kelly Ruf (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham)f along with freshman
Kylie Loforte (Farmington/Canandaigua Academy ) took first place with Loforte swimming the anchor with an impressive time of 25.47.
In the 1000-yard freestyle, junior
Lauren Zentko (Glenville/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) took first place with a time of 11:05.76 earning nine points for her team. She finished 25 seconds ahead second place finisher and teammate junior
Laura Steuerman (Fairport/Mount de Sales Academy).
The 200-yard freestyle was next and juniors
Taylor Waldrop (Fairport/Fairport) and
Kristin Higgins (Queensbury/Glens Falls) touched 1-2 with a time of 2:03.81 and 2:10.06 respectfully.
The 50-yard freestyle brought a first place finish for Loforte with an impressive time of 25.94.
The next event up was the 200-yard IM and the Red Dragons continued their winning ways with Chocko in first place with a time of 2:21.01.
The divers then took to the pool and found senior
Kara Garbarino (Latham/Shaker) taking top honors with a score of 210.95 and earning nine more points for the Red Dragons in the 1-meter dive. In the other 1-meter diving event Gabarino came away with another nine points as a first place finisher with a score of 157.05.
In the 15th of event of the day Loforte continued her impressive afternoon earning a time of 56.90 in the 100-yard freestyle and a first place finish. Cahill followed up Loforte's performance with a first place in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.32.
Oneonta will now begin preparations for its next meet when they welcome The College of St. Rose to campus to compete head to head on Friday, November 7th at 4 PM.
