Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lyden Heads Women’s Soccer over Plattsburgh

Laura Rolston tallies first career goal

Oct. 11, 2014

Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) headed the SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team to its third conference win of the season Saturday afternoon on Red Dragon Soccer Field. The junior's header with less than a minute remaining lifted the Red and White to the 2-1 victory.

Red Dragon keeper Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central) was tested early as Cammey Keyser intercepted a pass just yards from the cage. The junior keeper had a stoned Keyser to keep the game scoreless. Murphy made her second save of the half about 10 minutes later before the Red and White took over.

Oneonta fired five shots on target, two on target, in the first half, which led to numerous scoring opportunities. Taylor Messina (Smithtown/Smithtown East) had the best chance to strike early in the first half. After having her first attempt blocked off, the junior collected the ricochet heading the ball just high.

Oneonta came out with momentum in the second half. Rookie Laura Rolston (New City/Clarkstown South) opened the scoring with her first collegiate goal less than a minute and a half into the frame when she collected a Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) corner kick mere feet from the cage and beat the keeper to the short side.

From there, the game became a chess match, each coach looking for the right combination of players to finish the game. Keyser converted a Lindsey Bushey cross into a header goal in the 79th minute to set up the wild finish.

Murphy made a pair of key stops in the late 86th, early 87th minute to provide her squad a chance to bring home the win.

With a sense of urgency in the air from both the field and the sideline, Ceschini took the game's last corner in the final seconds of the 89th minute, only to have it knocked right back to her en route to the box. She quickly served the ball back into the box where it was found by the active head of Lyden for the game-winning goal with 47 ticks left on the clock.

The win vaults Oneonta (5-6-2, 3-2-1 SUNYAC) to third place into third place in the conference with five games remaining, including three conference contests. The Red and White are back in action next Saturday, October 18, when they host travel partner New Paltz in a 1 p.m. tilt.
