The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team fought to a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon over conference rival New Palt.z. Prior to the game, the squad recognized its four seniors: captain
Krystal Scott (Centereach/Newfield),
Lana Vecchiarelli (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker),
Elise Moinzadeh (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), and captain
Sarah Glowa (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake).
It did not take long for the seniors to make an impact. Moinzadeh took the games first shot forcing Hawk's keeper Katelyn Cordero to make a diving save, though Cordero could not control the rebound. Vecchiarelli took full advantage as she collected the loose ball in front of the cage and beat the laid out netminder.
The Red and White responded to a Hawk shot off the post in the seventh minute with a three shot onslaught between the 12
th and 13
th minutes, but could not find twine.
Each team had its share of chances in the second half. New Paltz's Gabriela Cabello broke through the defense early in the second stanza until
Julia Cranz (Huntington/Walt Whitman) caught her from behind, making a play on the ball to prevent a shot from being taken.
Rachel Berk (Eastchester/Easterchester) answered right back as she broke through the defense in box for a wide open shot, but fired just wide.
Vecchiarelli's goal stood as the game winner to lift Oneonta to a 6-6-2 mark overall and a 4-2-1 record in SUNYAC play. The Red Dragons pick up their non-conference schedule on Tuesday, when they travel to Ithaca College for a 3 pm match.
