Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer cruises past Plattsburgh 3-0

Williams and Purtell tally three points each

The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team added another opponent to its unbeaten streak, as today they disposed of Plattsburgh, 3-0, to push its overall record to 11-0-2.  The Red Dragons also held onto its share of first place in the SUNYAC with its 5-0-1 record.

Oneonta wasted no time in today's match in putting away Plattsburgh (7-6-1/2-3-0 SUNYAC), as they scored its three goals in the opening 20 minutes of the match.  Even though the final shots in the game were 9-8 in favor of Oneonta, their three goals came on just five shots in the first half.

"We started really brightly," texted coach Iain Byrne.  "The game was practically over at that stage and it was a bonus keeping another clean sheet."

Senior Mitchell Cain (Marcy/Whitesboro) got Oneonta off and running with his first goal of the season in the eighth minute.  Cain one-timed a cross that deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and over the goal line.  The pass came from junior Jake Sutherland (Syracuse/West Genesee).

Six minutes later, junior Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) registered his fifth goal of 2014 off an assist from sophomore Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City).  Williams took a crossing pass from Purtell and beat the keeper with a shot to the far post.  This tandem would connect again in the 21st minute, this time Purtell was on the receiving end of a pass from Williams.  Williams played a ball over the top of the defense and Purtell touched it forward past the keeper for his fifth goal of the year.

Senior Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) made three stops in goal today to run his record to 7-0-1 on the season.  The shutout was also Pellegrino's fifth of the season, as he lowered his goals against average to 0.24.

Byrne concluded, "With four straight road wins in the conference, we are full of confidence heading into the final part of the regular season."

Oneonta will return home for the first time in over two weeks on Wednesday as they host Scranton.  The game is scheduled for a 4pm start on Red Dragon Soccer Field.
