The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball held its rival, SUNY Cortland, to a season low in points tonight en route to a lopsided 51-32 victory in SUNYAC action. The win for Oneonta (12-3/6-2 SUNYAC) allowed them to sweep the two meetings between the rivals for the year, as last Tuesday, Oneonta defeated Cortland (10-6/6-3 SUNYAC) in their gym.
Senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) led three Oneonta players in double figures with 16 points. Classmate Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) and junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) each added 10 points. Longto and sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) each collected eight boards to lead Oneonta. Longto also had four blocks while Price and Crawford each had four steals.
Oneonta carried a 10-point lead into the second half and continued to build on it through the first nine minutes of the second half. A layup by sophomore Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) gave Oneonta a 37-19 lead. A few minutes later, Oneonta was up by twenty points, as they cruised from that point to the finish.
The visitors never got on track tonight, as the combination of poor shooting and turnovers proved to be their undoing. Cortland didn't have a single player reach double figures in the contest. Sophomore Caysea Cohen was the high scorer with nine points.
The first half was played end-to-end, but both squads found it tough going on the scoring end. Oneonta managed to shoot 29 percent and Cortland struggled to shoot 20 percent and finished the game shooting 19 percent. Oneonta did hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line that allowed them to take a comfortable 26-16 lead into halftime. Both teams had stretches where they couldn't convert field goals, which led to the low scoring opening half of play.
