In a battle between two of the top teams in the SUNYAC, it was Plattsburgh who got the edge with a 70-59 victory against SUNY Oneonta today in women's basketball action. The loss for the Red Dragons snapped its seven game win streak, as they are now 11-3 overall and 5-2 in conference play while the win pushes Plattsburgh to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the SUNYAC.
A jumper by Devona Paul with 3:48 to go in the game gave Plattsburgh a 60-49 lead, as it looked as though they had the game well in hand. Devona would foul out on the ensuing possession, which put sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) at the line for a pair of free throws. Price made both to cut the lead back to single digits.
At the 3:29 mark, sophomore Bryn Loomis (Norwich/Norwich) stole the inbound pass after Price's free throws and was fouled right away by Kathleen Payne. For Payne, it was her fifth foul, as she headed to the bench with her game high 28 points.
Oneonta continued its comeback as Loomis made 1-of-2 and then was followed one minute later with two more free throws from Price. Senior Grace Shilling then stole a pass, which she converted into a layup while also getting fouled. She made the free throw and Oneonta now trailed by only three points, 60-57, with 1:29 remaining.
Plattsburgh would make 10-of-10 free throws down the stretch including eight by junior Brittany Marshall, as they pulled away for the 11-point win. Marshall would finish the game with 13 points and six assists.
The two teams battled through the opening half to a 28-28 tie. There were three ties overall and four lead changes in the first half. Payne collected 17 points to lead the Cardinals while freshman Cara Adams (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) came off the bench to lead Oneonta with 10 points. Adams finished the game with a season high 13 points.
Senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) led Oneonta today with 17 points while Schilling added 15 points, five assists and three steals.
Senior Brooke Reifinger was the third player in double figures for Plattsburgh today, as she scored 12 points, which included 10 points in the second half.
Oneonta will host SUNY Cortland this coming Tuesday beginning at 6pm. The two met just this past Tuesday at Cortland where Oneonta came away with a 72-65 victory.
