Big second half propels women's basketball past Potsdam

The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team outscored visiting SUNY Potsdam 38-23 in the second half, pulling away for an easy 70-50 win tonight at home in SUNYAC action.  Three players reached double figures for Oneonta (11-2/5-1 SUNYAC), as they captured its seventh straight win.

Senior Alyshia Crawford (Oxford/Oxford) led the Red Dragons with 19 points while classmate Grace Schilling (Northport/Northport) and junior Sarah Longto (Kingston/Kingston) added 10 points each.  Oneonta held a huge advantage in points off turnovers (17-6) and second chance points (20-6).  They also held a decided rebounding advantage 59-33 including 21 offensive rebounds.

Oneonta came out of halftime leading 32-27 and quickly built its lead to 11 points in the opening five minutes of the second half.  A layup by Longto gave the Red Dragons its double-digit lead as they cruised from there to the finish.  Longto, sophomore Lyteshia Price (Liverpool/Liverpool) and freshman Brianna Spector (Philadelphia, PA/Upper Dublin) all grabbed eight boards in the contest to lead Oneonta.

Oneonta connected on three consecutive layups to jump out to an early 6-0 lead.  Potsdam (3-9/1-4 SUNYAC) senior Jessica Kouzan then scored eight points to bring the game its first tie at 8 apiece at the 16:26 mark.  The two teams would exchange the lead a few times over the next 10 minutes and would be tied again at 21-21 with 6:41 remaining in the half when Katie LaVoie made a jumper for Potsdam.

The Red Dragons would close the half with an 11-4 spurt to take a 32-27 lead into the break.  Crawford and Kouzan would lead their teams with 14 and 13 points respectively.  Kouzan finished with 19 points in the game.

Oneonta will be home again tomorrow afternoon against Plattsburgh beginning at 2pm.
