Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer cruises past Oswego 4-1

The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team cruised past Oswego 4-1 today. The two teams were tied at the halftime break 1-1, but three unanswered goals in the second by the Red Dragons propelled them to victory.

The senior trio of Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield), Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) led the way for the Red Dragons as they each scored.

Guglielmo got Oneonta (4-3-1/1-0-1 SUNYAC) on the board early as she scored in the 2nd minute of the game off a Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) pass. Ceschini played the ball along the top of the 18 to Guglielmo who touched the ball to her right and struck it to the back post beyond Oswego's starting keeper, Alyssa Glasshagel.

The Lakers (6-3/1-1 SUNYAC) responded with a goal of their own. In the fifth minute, Georgia Traynor put a direct kick, from about the half way line, into the box. Nikki Liadka beat Oneonta keeper, Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster), to the ball and headed it in before an Oneonta defender could back and clear it off the line.

The Red Dragons put the pressure on in the second half, as they took seven shots, putting three of them past the second half keeper for Oswego, Emily Varonier.

The first of the second half came from DeSimone as she received the ball at the top of the 18. Karly maneuvered the ball using some nifty footwork to work herself free and ripped a shot over the keepers outstretched arms to give Oneonta their second lead of the game.

Regensburger added a goal in the 74th minute to give the Red Dragons 3-1 lead as she received a pass from sophomore Jessica Lyden (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) on the left wing. Regensburger took the ball with her left foot and chopped it back to her right before letting a shot fly that soared into the net in the upper right hand corner.

Guglielmo would add to the score with her second of the game with less than 30 seconds to go in the match. Sophomore Kayla Distin (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) sent a corner kick into the box from the right side of the field that was flicked on by DeSimone and headed home by Guglielmo.

Stark earned her first win of the season, making one save in the game. Her counterparts, Glasshagel and Varnoier, combined for seven saves.

Oneonta is in action again as they travel to Geneseo next Friday, October 4th for a game starting at 4:00 p.m.
