Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer ties Geneseo on the road 1-1

Geneseo, N.Y. - SUNY Oneonta junior Lana Vecchiarelli (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored the tying goal as the women's soccer team draws with Geneseo on the road 1-1. The Red Dragons are now 4-3-2 overall and 1-0-2 in the SUNYAC conference.

SUNY Geneseo (3-4-3/1-1-1 SUNYAC) got on the board first in the 51st minute of play. Alex Krebs' tallied a goal off a 25-yard bending free kick that went into the top-right corner.

Oneonta picked up the tempo and began to press the Blue Knights before scoring the equalizer as the Red Dragons had four shots and one corner kick prior to tying the game. Vecchiarelli chose the ideal moment to score her first goal in an Oneonta uniform. The Red Dragons earned a corner kick that was taken by sophomore Liz Lasota (Cutchogue/Mattituck). Lasota sent the ball into goal area that was headed home by Vecchiarelli as she battled off a crowded goal line to score from close range.

Both teams had solid scoring opportunities in the overtime periods, but the goalkeepers were up to the challenge. Oneonta senior Melissa Guglielmo (Somers/Somers) put a hard shot on goal from inside 15 yards that was smothered by Geneseo's Julia Sanger in the 93rd minute. The Knights broke out for an opportunity of their own less than 30 seconds later. Emily Green got a free strike inside 20 yards that was gobbled up by Oneonta's Rori Stark (Brewster/Brewster).

In the second overtime, sophomore Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) got loose for an attempt from inside 15 yards, but a diving deflection save by Sanger kept the game knotted at 1-1.

Stark made four saves in the game while her counterpart, Sanger, made seven.

Oneonta outshot Geneseo 20-11 and had a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Red Dragons turn around and travel to Brockport for a game starting at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, October 5th.
