Men's soccer works overtime for 1-0 win at Ithaca

Box Score SUNY Oneonta sophomore Dylan Williams (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored in the 94th minute to lift the men's soccer team to a season opening 1-0 victory today at Ithaca College.  The goal came on a breakaway after junior Justin Rivera (Bay Shore/Bay Shore) sent a long pass ahead that Williams was able to secure before putting it past the keeper.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 90 minutes of today's contest, which was the opening game for both squads.  The shots were 2-2 after the first half until Oneonta turned up the heat in the final 45 minutes hoping to get a shot to go to the back of the goal.  The Ithaca keeper was up to the task, keeping the Red Dragons off the scoreboard.

"We dominated possession throughout the match, but didn't create enough goal scoring opportunities," texted coach Byrne.  "Ithaca was organized and defended well in numbers and could have won the game if they had capitalized on one of their counter attacks."

Williams finished the contest with three shots on goal including the game-winner.  The Red Dragons finished the game with a 14-6 advantage in shots.

Junior transfer, Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin), and classmate Daniel DeBottis (/) combined for the shutout.  Pellegrino made two saves while DeBottis played the final 48 minutes and recorded no saves in picking up his initial win of the season.

Next up for Oneonta is the 2013 NCAA Division III champion Messiah Falcons.  The Red Dragons play the preseason No. 1 on Friday afternoon on Red Dragon Field in the opening game of the Oneonta Mayor's Cup Tournament.  The contest begins at 4pm and admission is free.
