Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer returns home with 1-1 record from Cougar Classic

Defeated Ricahrd Stockton on Friday 2-1

Oneonta, N.Y. – The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team returned home from the Cougar Classic hosted by Kean University 1-1 on  the weekend.  They defeated Richard Stockton on Friday 2-1 before falling to the host today by the same score.

Oneonta (1-1) got off to a hot start against Richard Stockton (0-1) when senior Amanda Regensburger (Selden/Newfield) finished off a cross from sophomore Kayla Ceschini (Miller Place/Miller Place) just 22 seconds into the game. Ceschini won the ball off the kickoff and dribbled down the right hand side before playing a long cross into Regensburger who one-timed it by the keeper into the net for the quick 1-0 lead.

The Red Dragons kept up the pressure up with three shots in the next four minutes, which included hitting the crossbar and a blocked shot by a defender for a ball that was headed into the goal. Senior Karly DeSimone (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) broke through in the 24th minute with a long run down the right side of the field and finished it off herself before the keeper could get to there.

The Ospreys were able to pull a goal back when their player was fouled inside the penalty area resulting in a red card. Oneonta's goalkeeper, Kelley Murphy (Albany/Colonie Central), made the initial save on Briana Fischer's shot, but a second penalty kick was awarded just eight seconds later. Marissa Bruno was able to convert from the spot kick.

Down to ten players, the Red Dragons were able to deflect the pressure that Stockton was applying to pick up the first win of the season.

In today's game versus Kean (1-1), the Cougars broke open the scoring in the 25th minute when Deanna Columbia finished the rebound off the initial save Murphy made on a Sam Marchetti breakaway.

The game continued to be end to end for the next 50 minutes with neither team having any real scoring opportunities. DeSimone would be the player to answer the call for the Red Dragons. She received the pass at the top of the 18 and weaved into the box before being dragged down by a Cougar defender. She stepped up to the spot and took the shot herself. Kean's goalkeeper, KC Nunez, got her hand on the ball and deflected it off the post, but not far enough as DeSimone followed the shot and buried it in the net to tie the game.

The Cougars would answer back as they applied pressure to the Red Dragons. In the 84th minute, Casey Garlasco put a corner kick into the box that was headed by Amanda Repko off the crossbar and fell to the feet of Samantha Kalafor who put it into the goal.

Oneonta responded with high pressure themselves and had two corner kick opportunities of their own before the end of the game.

The game was evenly played with Oneonta holding the edge in the shot department 14 to 12 and Kean in corners 6 to 5.

Murphy made five saves in the game and her counterpart, Nunez, made eight.

Oneonta will be in action next weekend as they open with RIT on Saturday, Sept. 7th, for the opening game of the Mayor's Cup Tournament. The game will be played at Hartwick and is slated for a 1pm kickoff.
